SFS Design Engineer Shaun gives an insight to apprenticeships at Metsec

“Metsec’s onsite training centre gave me all the instruction and support I needed and made me feel part of the company.”

Shaun joined Metsec’s Apprenticeship scheme in 2012. Since completing his apprenticeship he has completed a Higher National Certificate in Civil Engineering Studies with Merit and he is now studying a Bachelor of Engineers Degree.

“I could have taken A’ levels and gone to university, but the idea of being paid to learn and gain work experience really appealed to me. That’s why I chose to follow the apprenticeship route.

Metsec’s apprenticeship scheme was head and shoulders above others that I looked at. The company’s onsite training centre meant that I didn’t get sent out to college, which made me feel part of the company from the very start. It provided the right mix of theory and practical work and there was always someone there to talk to, giving me valuable support during my apprenticeship.

I’m now working alongside the people who provided me with that support, which is great!

In addition to studying, my apprenticeship included practical metalworking skills, introductions to design software and the chance to work in different departments throughout the company, giving me an appreciation of how different disciplines work together and the importance of teamwork. It also taught me communication skills like dealing with customers and working with colleagues.

I’m now doing the job I trained for as well as studying for a degree at the Open University. As with my apprenticeship, I am finding the combination of practical work experience and academic study challenging but very enjoyable. I can see how things I am learning relate to my work which makes understanding theories and concepts so much easier. And the support I am getting from Metsec has been second to none.

Would I recommend an apprenticeship? Well, obviously it depends on the individual, but from my experience, the answer would be a definite ‘yes’. I have some great work colleagues and made new friends. My current position is proof that Metsec’s apprenticeship scheme leads to a real job and my qualifications will enable me to further my career with the company.”
