Purlins delivered to tight deadlines at Magna Park South

Three new speculative warehouses at Magna Park South, Lutterworth, adding some 644,000 square feet of storage, distribution and administration facilities to the renowned Magna Park logistics hub, Europe’s largest dedicated logistics and
distribution park.

Conveniently located between the M1 and M6 motorways in the East Midlands, in the UK’s ‘golden triangle’ for logistics, the development is the second phase in the extension of Magna Park South and is being undertaken by major logistics investor
and developer, GLP Europe.

Main contractors, TSL, appointed Billington Structures to undertake design, fabrication and installation of the hot-rolled steel frames together with design and installation of cold-rolled and floor decking elements for the three steel portal
frame structures.

voestalpine Metsec’s Purlins Division manufactured and supplied all cold-rolled steel purlins and accessories to Billington’s design requirements and to meet particularly tight on-site construction schedules; The three logistics and distribution
units individually provide around 388,000, 137,000 and 119,000 square feet of office and storage space, with the steelwork being completed in just six weeks for the larger unit and three weeks for each of the smaller units.

480 TONNES OF COLD ROLLED STEEL

Each multi-span unit features an underside of haunch height of fifteen metres and, collectively, the three units required approximately 2100 tonnes of hot-rolled steel and 480 tonnes of cold-rolled steel, which included purlins and side rails, together
with panel joint rails and horizontal cladding supports to accommodate the horizontal configuration of the external cladding.

Commenting on the development, Luke Seward, Project Manager for Billington Structures, states, “We were up against some tight deadlines on the three warehouses at Magna Park South from start to finish, which meant that we needed to use a
supplier we could trust.

“We have developed a great working relationship with voestalpine Metsec’s Purlins Division over many years. We had total confidence in their ability to manufacture and supply the cold-rolled steel elements to the quality and performance required and, just as importantly, to the short on-site construction programme.

“voestalpine Metsec’s dedicated MetSPEC design software made the design and specification of the purlins and accessories quick and easy, streamlining the entire process and helping to ensure that our client’s expectations were fulfilled.”
