The Oval Cricket Ground
Project: The Oval Cricket Ground
Metsec supplied 41 tonnes of light gauge galvanised steel zed purlins for the highly complex curved roof of the new OCS Stand at the Brit Oval cricket ground in south London.
The new stand has increased the ground’s capacity from 18,500 to around 23,000.
Structural challenges on the £25 million stand’s roof included curvature in three directions, on the crescent, vertically and from back to front, with twists and facets to every grid line and tapering bays. The design meant that each purlin and anti-sag rod were of different lengths with non-standard connections and cleats. The open sided canopy is also subject to very high wind loadings, up to 1.84 KN/sq.m in certain local areas.
