Green recognition for Metsec
Metsec, one of the UK’s largest suppliers of cold rolled steel products and part of the multinational voestalpine Group, has joined the ranks of some of the world’s ‘greenest’ companies after being awarded with the prestigious ISO 14001 environmental standard accreditation.
As early adopters of an environmental management process, Metsec is committed to reducing its carbon footprint year on year by reducing its use of natural resources, using green energy alternatives wherever possible, reducing waste to landfill and actively promoting recycling and re-use of waste among many other measures.
Metsec has an ongoing commitment to undertaking its activities in an efficient and financially sustainable manner in-line with environmental best practice and meeting the requirements of ISO 14001 and has already made significant in-roads into reducing it energy consumption and emissions.
Stephen Tilsley, Chief Executive of Metsec said: “Our accreditation applies to those environmental aspects over which companies have control, and over which we are expected to have an influence. We have reduced CO2 emissions by 25%, reduced gas consumption by 37% and reduced electricity consumption by 14%. This isn’t rocket science, we used the Carbon Trust Advisor three years ago to identify opportunities and we have steadily worked our way through the actions. As front runners in addressing these issues, we see these steps as vital in leading the development of manufacturing industry to become leaner and more focused on meeting, and exceeding, the requirements of its customers.
