Metsec first to strike cold rolled gold

Metsec has become the first cold rolled steel manufacturer to secure the Steel Construction Sustainability Charter's top award.

Metsec plc underwent a detailed and successful audit to achieve the Gold Standard.

Drawn-up by the British Constructional Steelwork Association (BCSA), the Charter aims to develop steel as a sustainable form of construction in terms of economic viability, social progress and environmental responsibility.

Metsec received its award at the BCSA annual general meeting, held ahead of the inaugural Steelday 07.

This major new construction industry exhibition and conference was hosted in London by the BCSA and Corus. Attended by more than 40 of the UK's leading steel companies, it attracted over 500 visitors. The exhibition featured steel products and services, while seminars delivered by industry experts highlighted new developments in steel design and construction.

To achieve the Gold Standard, Metsec's Framing Division had to show that it has a series of management systems in place, including:

• A published sustainability policy
• A programme of involvement with the local community on social issues and with the steel construction community generally
• An accredited Health and Safety Management System to OHSAS 18001
• Investors in People accreditation or a structured programme for personnel training, development and communication
• An accredited Environmental Management System to BS EN ISO 14001
• A policy to manage energy and vehicle fuel usage in the business
• An accredited Quality Management System to BS EN ISO 9001

BCSA deputy director general Gillian Mitchell MBE said: "The audit process is rigorous, and attaining the Gold Standard is a significant achievement, and one that demonstrates a company very much in tune with the responsibilities it has in all areas of its business."

Metsec is the UK's leading producer of cold rolled steel sections and profiles for use as lightweight structural systems in the building and construction industries. They are also employed as bespoke components in manufacturing.
