Lattice Division
Tricky temple software solution
Metsec has used 3D computer software to simplify complicated roof detailing at a Sikh temple.
The leading cold roll-formed steel producer has supplied long span, pitched and tapered lightweight lattice trusses to support the hipped roof of the new Gurdwara, in Birmingham.
But first its Lattice Joist Division used 3D modelling software to simplify detailing on complicated gutter support steelwork required behind the dome of the Baba Deep Singh Gurdwara (Khalsa Welfare Trust), in Handsworth.
Working closely with the client and client’s engineer, Metsec’s own engineers were also able to call on its free in-house design and detailing service.
The trusses, spanning up to 15m with an 11 degree pitch, were supplied in two halves for ease of handling, and then bolted together on site. Metsec also supplied approximately 400m of cold rolled zed purlins and eaves beams to support roof sheeting.
Lattice Joist Division sales director Darren Bird said: “This an excellent example of how we can bring our technology to bear on a project, and in doing so turn a potentially complex and time consuming job into a much more straightforward one.
“And because we can be up to 50% lighter than traditional hot rolled beams, recent increases in raw material prices have had less impact on the total construction costs for this building.”
Manufactured from high yield steel, Metsec’s lightweight Lattice Joists & Trusses offer a high strength to weight ratio, and their open web nature allows for the simple passage of services.
They are supplied finished with zinc phosphate primer as standard, with other finishes available on request.
