Metsec delivers steel structures for £80 million seafront development

Metsec Framing Division has provided a range of Metsec Metframe structures for an £80 million seafront development in Wales. The Swansea Point residential development, comprising of 14 separate buildings, is the largest project ever undertaken by Metsec. Due for completion at the end of 2007, this contemporary development will provide a range of town houses and apartments and significantly improve this part of Swansea marina.

Metframe uses lightweight, cold rolled, galvanised steel sections in bolt together pre-fabricated panels to form medium-rise building superstructures. The system is quick to install, accurate and cost-effective. Approved Metframe installers Atkin Trade Specialists are currently erecting a floor every two weeks. On average, this equates to a building being completed every 10 or 12 weeks - substantially quicker than via traditional build methods.

Atkins Trade Specialists' Thomas Atkin said: "We work with Metsec on more than 90% of our builds and this is by far our largest development to date. In a project of this scale it is essential that we can guarantee a fast and accurate build to avoid holding up follow on trades. The high quality of Metsec's drawings and details undoubtedly facilitate the construction and overall success of the projects."

As well as the fast track build, Metframe was specified for Swansea Point because it allows the use of concrete floors in the main buildings and it can incorporate a cold rolled joisted mezzanine floor solution for a number of top floor apartments.

Metframe can also provide support or restraint for a wide range of cladding systems, offering architects great flexibility in their choice of external finish. At Swansea Point they are using insulated render. This highly competitive wall system offers numerous finishes and colour selection and is ideal for use on Metframe.
