Metsec engineers designed the new floor to carry a total imposed load of 5.0kN/m². The floor joists are all 300mm deep, spaced at 400mm centres, with a maximum of 7.3m span. Flush fitting timber inserts to the top and bottom chords allowed easy fixing of the 38mm chipboard floor finish on top and the plasterboard ceiling underneath.

The open web configuration of the joists facilitated the simple passage of mechanical and electrical services within the floor, giving future occupants of the retail space maximum flexibility for change.
