13th March 2018 | Metsec Cable Management Reaches New Heights At 1,016 feet high, The Shard is regarded as one of the most ambitious architectural endeavours in the United Kingdom. Its form and shape, however, required a versatile cable management solution for distributing the cables that service the Shangri-La Hotel inside The Shard. Metsec Cable Management convinced on aspects of design, cost and availability to win this prestigious project.
Project Manager at M&E contractor Briggs & Forrester, Sean Fuell explains, “We were recommended Metsec cable management products by the distributor, Newey & Eyre. The products were not over-engineered and struck the right balance between spec and price, ideal for such a high-end project where system quality is paramount but cost can easily rocket if building products and materials are not chosen carefully.”
A mix of Metsec’s trunking, ladder rack, cable tray and channel now distribute service cables for HVAC and lighting throughout the hotel’s circular corridors on 15 floors across level 34 – 52 of the building.
From floor to floor, the tapering form of the building increasingly restricted the space available to manoeuvre and install material on site. Sean Fuell comments, “The installation of the cable support and distribution system was challenging, not least because access for deliveries was restricted and storage for building products was unavailable in and around this tight site.” However, on-time and in full delivery performance ensured that the site was kept tidy and that the Metsec solution could be installed in line with the narrow installation programme.
Sales Director Jon Hillier is excited about Metsec Cable Management having been chosen for the Shangri-La hotel, “We are delighted to see that our product and service excellence has been recognised throughout the supply chain. Finding our cable management solution used in what has been probably one of the most impressive building projects in modern UK construction history is a real compliment and shows that our cable management solutions are versatile and efficient on major contracts.”
